Common Materials Added To Alloy Steel Forgings

Alloyed steel is often used in forgings. They use a range of engineering alloys that can be heat-treated to be given a broad range of mechanical properties. There are several materials that can be added to an alloy steel forging to create different types of forgings.

Silicon and Nickel

Silicon and nickel are used to increase the retention of ductility and to improve the resistance to impact. Silicon is sometimes added to steel because it will give the steel magnetic properties. It is often used in electric power devices.


Molybdenum might be added to make the forging less brittle. Molybdenum can make steel more resistant to corrosion. It can also withstand extreme temperatures without expanding or softening.

Chromium, Copper, Silicon, and Molybdenum

Chromium, molybdenum, silicon, and copper might be added to increase the strength and also make the forging more resistant to high temperatures. Chromium is one of the most common materials added to steel and is used to create stainless steel. 

Nickel and Copper

Nickel and copper may be added to increase strength and corrosion resistance. Copper is also often combined with iron because of its conductive properties. Nickel is useful when you wish to increase strength without reducing ductility. 

Vanadium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, and Chromium

Tungsten, chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum can be added to steel to increase its strength. Tungsten and vanadium are often added to steel to make it harder. It is often referred to as high-speed steel because it is used in the creation of products that are operated at a high speed, such as drill bits and saw blades. 

Non-Alloy Steels

If you would not like to use an alloy steel forging, there are other options that might meet your needs, such as stainless steel and carbon steel. Stainless steel can be forced to improve its properties. Usually, forging stainless steel will make it more corrosion-resistant. This is necessary when creating products that will be used in harsh environments. This approach creates a grain flow that is different from any other and will make the alloy very strong.

Carbon steel forgings increase the strength of the steel piece by eliminating air bubbles. This form of steel is also very resistant to wear and tear and is impact-resistant. It can withstand high temperatures and is very malleable. The advantage of alloy steel forgings over these other types is that you will be able to create a steel product that meets your exact needs.
